"Yes, and..."
In the improvisational acting field, the "yes, and..." principle guides players by encouraging them to accept statements made by fellow actors (the yes), then follow through on the thought (the and).
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that St. Augustine has a budding improv community. The Limelight Theatre has been hosting workshops at various levels. They go by the monicker "The Adventure Project". The series is being hosted by Chief Adventure Officer, Amy Angelilli. She is a graduate of Denver, Colorado's Bovine Metropolis Theater School.
Her series is encouraging adults not to overlook the value of playtime. Does anyone else agree that growing up is overrated? I'm in no hurry to "grow up." By way of creative exercises that demand spontaneity, participants avoid taking themselves too seriously. Some feel that because it gets one "out of his/her head," acting has therapeutic value.
My friends and I attended one of Amy's workshops recently and found ourselves pretending to be superheroes, dancing and acting like cats. We can't wait to attend another session soon! Amy's summer series has me consuming improv related podcasts, videos and articles.
The Limelight Theatre is located near the corner of Old Mission Ave and San Marco Ave in uptown St. Augustine.
